WU Tung-Lung

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1976 and currently lives and works in Taipei. Wu graduated from Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Academy of Arts, in 1998, and Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts, Tainan National University of the Arts, in 2004. A sense of uncertainty often arises when looking at Wu Tung-Lung’s works, and viewers find it diffcult to interpret his works from a single perspective, and can only float in the uncertainty of his works. At first glance, viewers are extremely inclined to simply conduct formal perceptive interpretation of his works due to their minimalist and serene forms and colors; however, when viewers try to gain deeper understanding, the works will then gradually present their own interpretive uncertainties. Visually, Wu’s works do not present perceptive lines or the expressive forms of physical movements; instead, they present rational constructs of flat coloring that is almost hard edge, which seems to be the spiritual aesthetics of the formal construct. Yet, the pictures with a certain symbolic inclination turn viewers from perceptions to considerations of symbolic meanings from time to time—is it writing, ribbon, or a certain plant? Formal perceptivity is then differentiated by symbolic meanings. Also, displaying own physicality is another distinctive quality of his works. The surfaces of physical pictures polished by Wu also pull viewers from inner expressions of forms back to their perceptions of the materials, a warm and slow state. The multidimensionality of forms, symbolic meanings, and media, disturb the thoughts of viewers, but they can eventually sense the warmth and serenity after the subtle unrest through the steady and slow colors and designs, and float in the gaps in-between the feelings and perceptions of Wu Tung-Lung’s works
